Today in Chickamauga History - September 7
1862, September 7: Contained within the Library of Congress within the Abraham LINCOLN papers is the original letter from John ROSS to LINCOLN. ROSS’ letter stated:
“Philadelphia
September 7, 1862
Sir:
I have the honor to forward to you a communication by my nephew Mr. Wm. P. Ross, who recently accompanied me from the Cherokee Nation with his family and also on my late visit to Washington – As he and my Brother Lewis Ross are anxious to return to the Cherokee Nation early as practicable, I very respectfully request that they may be each furnished with the necessary passports from the Government, to enable them to do so.

John Ross Prinl. Chief
Cherokee Nation”
