1794, September 22: Massacre of Indians in Tennessee - Governor William Blount of Southwest Territory (Tennessee) writes, by order of General James Robertson, has lately pursued the trail of a party of Indians to the Tennessee River. The militia then crossed over and destroyed the towns of Nickajack and Running Water, killing upwards of 50 Indians and carrying away twenty prisoners to Nashville. Insists that if General Robertson is responsible for this destruction, he was not warranted in so doing by an order from the governor's office. - http://wardepartmentpapers.org/s/home/item/48041
1839, September 22: The Commission of Indian Affairs report to the Secretary of War that there are 1,046 Cherokees remaining in North Carolina, including the Oconaluftee Cherokee (now joined in the Quallatown area by the Nantahala Cherokee), the 300 Cherokee from the areas of North Carolina within the New Echota cession (Snowbird and Cheoah communities), and 46 refugees from the internment camps. There are also another 300 in the states of Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama.
