1844, November 13: On this date, the Cherokee National Council authorized the formation of a Lighthorse company. Composed of a captain, a lieutenant and twenty-four horsemen. They were to arrest all fugitives from justice in the Cherokee Nation. For several years the Lighthorsemen also served as judges and jurors, administering punishments themselves. Usually, they punished those convicted of minor crimes by whipping. In 1874, the Cherokees built a prison at Tahlequah. It was the only Indian Nation to do so.
SIDE NOTE: CHICKAMAUGA are currently not on the federally recognized list as of this writing. Although, being recognized by two U. S. Presidents George WASHINGTON and Thomas JEFFERSON. It was the CHICKAMAUGA who signed the Treaty of New Echota guaranteeing them lands in Arkansas, etc. A treaty can be defined as a contract. The CHICKAMAUGA signed every treaty with the United States government. On half of the treaties signed with the United States government, it was the CHICKAMAUGA who were the only Native signatories. At termination, what became the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma lost all their rights. If a treaty (contract) is a treaty (contract) all of these treaties MUST reverse back to the CHICKAMAUGA NATION.
