Today’s Ask the Chief Question is from Blayne Welch, one of our amazing 9-year-old Citizens.
Blayne asked, “What does the symbol on The Chickamauga Nation flag mean? Why is the flag Red with a Black Stripe?
Blayne, the symbol is called the Ancient Axe of Authority. It is a symbol for the Authority of either the Chief or Priest of a Tribe. What it represents is the Keepers of the Ancient Laws and Religion.
They symbol dates back to at least 700 AD and possibly as far back as 2000 BC. Depending on the dating or different ruins that have been discovered.
In the 1500s to the 1800s the Ancient Axe is worn by the Chief either in battle and to show their authority in the Tribe.
Today, the Ancient Axe of Authority is a representation of The Chickamauga Nation being the Keepers of the ancient laws and religion.
If you look close at the two blades, they look like crescent moons (waxing and waning) which is a tribute to our cultural practice of celebrating the full moon.
